The first thing that made me laugh in The Consumed wasn’t a line of dialogue. It was the signage.
The Hargrove Galleria is lined with storefronts that look just like the mall you grew up in, until you actually read them. Every name is a parody, turned just far enough to say the quiet part about the brand it’s mocking. The game’s whole thesis is that the mall is a cathedral and the brands are saints, so the store names are where that satire starts.
Here’s my guide to the ones you’ll be securing on your shift, and a few you’ll walk past. (These are my readings; the game never explains itself, which is half the fun.)
The Stores on Your Shift
VICTIM’S SECRET
The easiest one to spot. Swap one word in a lingerie empire’s name and the “secret” stops sounding flirty and starts sounding like a crime scene. In a mall where employees have been disappearing, it lands a little too well.
AMERICAN BEAGLE
A teen denim staple, with the eagle swapped for a beagle. It’s goofy on the surface, and that’s what makes it unsettling at 3 AM in an empty concourse.
GOODBYE KITTY
The cutest mascot in retail, saying goodbye instead of hello. It’s a farewell sign hanging over a store in a dying mall.
FOREVER TODAY
A fast-fashion name that already promised eternal youth, pushed one step further into eternal present. That fits a game whose clock is stuck on 20XX, a year that never moves forward.
HAIR SUPERIORITY
Every mall had a chain salon with a pun for a name. This one tips the pun into something smug and a little authoritarian, a theme that keeps coming back.
DROP DEAD
It already sounds like an edgy streetwear label, which is the point. In this mall it’s also a little too literal.
EATEMYOUNG ACADEMY
The strangest store on the list, and my favorite. “Eat ’em young” is the marketing idea of hooking customers as early as possible, and here it’s an academy. Its terminal has some of the funniest, bleakest writing in the game: corporate etiquette lessons that read like HR double-talk. (I talked about it more in my genre deep dive.)
BREAD N CIRCUS
Straight out of ancient Rome: panem et circenses, keep the public fed and entertained so they don’t ask questions. Putting it on a mall storefront is about as on-the-nose as satire gets, and I love it.
The Ones You’ll Walk Past
The concourse has more signs than stores you’re assigned to, and these might be the sharpest jokes in the building:
- CULT FACTORY. Every big-box “factory” store, made honest about what brand loyalty can turn into.
- MARSHALLS LAW. A discount department store meets martial law. Shopping as a state of emergency.
- ETERNAL CHICKEN. Fast food promising everlasting life. In a game about consumerism as religion, the food court gets a sacrament too.
- REGRET EXPRESS. Fast fashion, fast food, fast regret.
- SEASON ZERO. The fashion calendar reset to nothing: no new collection is ever coming.
And One Real Brand
One name on the directory isn’t a parody: GREY GRADIENT. It’s the real fashion brand The Consumed was made with as its Series 002, and its upstairs store is the one place in the mall that feels safe. In a building full of parody saints, the real brand is your sanctuary. That’s either the best joke in the game or the most honest one. Probably both.
